HAMELIN

I arrived at Hamelin rail station from Berlin , 3 hours with a change at Hannover, for a one night stay.---- Hamelin is a town on the river Weser in Lower Saxony Germany. Population is around 56,000. It is famous for the story of the Pied Piper and the Children and Rats. (Der Rattenfanger ) from 13th century. There are poems by Goethe and Robert Browning. -- The town was founded in 851 AD with a monastery. The town lives off the Pied Piper, there is a golden rat on the footbridge over the river. There is a Pied Piper mobile on a wall of a building. The Hochzeitshaus Glockenspiel plays a tune daily., also rats figure in shop window displays. There are lovely timbered buildings, but without the Piper ,Hamelin would be just ordinary. Still glad i came.
